A Sketch of His Life by the Editor, an original article by Bishop Gilbert Haven, and the Eulogies Pronounced by Eminent Men. Boston: James H. Earle, 1874. Octavo, original green publisher's cloth stamped in black and gold. 336 pages. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Covers lightly scuffed, but still a very good copy. Name in ink of Mrs. A. H. Sumner on front endleaf. This great American, one of the greatest orators and jurists of his day, was a man of incredible learning and one of the most feared voices in the anti-slavery movement. His outspoken views on the matter resulted in his being brutally attacked and bludgeoned nearly to death in his own Congressional chambers in 1856. Included among the eulogies here printed is the famous one by Hon. Lucius Q. C. Lamar, then a representative in congress from Mississippi, a bitter enemy of the anti-slavery faction and later a Confederate officer. It was considered among the warmest, most striking addresses delivered on the occasion of Sumner's death. Bookseller Inventory #
