About this title

Synopsis:

Traces the life of the legendary film star, from his impoverished childhood in England through his years of success in motion pictures in the United States to his exile in 1952.

From Kirkus Reviews:

This Dickensian rags-to-riches biography from Turk (Edith Wharton, 1997, etc.) is smoothly readable, and makes accessible and enticing a genre of filmmaking that may otherwise seem dated and silly to young movie-goers. Turk chronicles Chaplin's life, beginning with his childhood in slums and workhouses, as the son of an alcoholic, absent father and a mentally ill mother. Circumstances forced him and his brother to attempt to support the family by entertaining and other jobs. Continuing through Chaplin's work in vaudeville, his entry into movies, and growing fame and influence, Turk also tells of his unjust exile from the US during the McCarthy era, his knighthood, and other honors. In a work that is illustrated with archival photographs and a few well-chosen period drawings, Turk not only covers Chaplin's life and films, but also his politics and the studio system as it evolved during his working life. This is a fascinating introduction to the man, his work, and the era that produced him. (notes, bibliography, filmography, index) (Biography. 12-14) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP.
