About this Item

This scarce Des Barres chart of the coast of Massachusetts Bay has been expertly restored. The leaf plating process has been used to restore limited areas of the map which had disintegrated over time. The in-filled areas are the two lower corners (generally less than 3" from the margins) and an inch or less of both side margins. Certain image areas -- primarily portions of the mileage and latitude scales -- have been expertly redrawn. A few place names on Cape Cod are lacking. The result is a chart which, while acknowledging its age of more than 200 years, is very presentable. A scarce coastal chart of the Massachusetts coast from Cape Ann to Plymouth, plus the tip of "Cape Codd." Among the features identified are Salem and Newburyport harbors, Little Nahaunt, Konohaset Rocks, and Sciluate Harbour, as well as Race Point, Herring Cove, Province Town and Pammet on the Cape. (A windmill symbol appears north of Pammet.) This is the first state of this chart according to Stevens; it is on paper with the LVG watermark, has no longitude scale in the upper or lower borders, has a typescript "7" on verso, and names only nine places in Boston Harbor. Stevens notes: "This first state is very rare. It is found only in early copies of the New England Section which it is believed were issued separately before being incorporated into the Neptune." Stevens, Catalogue of the Atlantic Neptune: 91. Sellers and Van Ee: 967. A scarce coastal chart of the Massachusetts coast from Cape Ann to Plymouth, plus the tip of "Cape Codd."
