Pages are very clean and intact except for light to moderate age toning throughout, foxing and browning on front and back endpapers and first and last few pages, a small hole affecting a few words of text on Pages 283-284, occasional staining, and a former owner's signature in pen on front pastedown. Covers are clean and intact overall but have glue repair, chipping at head of spine, moderate rubbing, worn corners, and slight edge wear. A Very Good copy. This is a unique compendium of information that consists mostly of "recipes" catering toward specific fields of study, industries, or trades. There are also brief sections of general life advice (including career advice for those who are young and unemployed), handy rules (such as figuring interest for business), and snippets of facts. Authored by physician A. W. Chase who was also in the pharmaceutical and grocery business for some time. Chase says the recipes were garnered from his own experience as well as outside sources. There are about 800 recipes in this book that address about 400 subjects. Departments represented herein: Merchant's and Grocer's, Saloon, Medical, Tanner's Shoe and Harness Maker's, Painter's, Blacksmith's, Tinner's, Gunsmithing, Jeweler's, Farrier's, Cabinet-Maker's, and Baker's and Cooking. In the Baker's Department, one can find cooking recipes for breads, cakes, pies, puddings, and other foodstuffs. In the Saloon Deparment, there are recipes for foods (such as popcorn balls, molasses candy, sherbet, and ice cream) and drinks (including ales, beers, cream sodas, and lemonade) intended to be served in saloons. Many of the recipes in this book are for inedible concoctions such as inks, dyes, polishes, and varnishes. In the Medical and Farrier's Departments, many recipes for different medicines are given. The Medical Department includes medical recipes that are claimed to treat a diverse variety of ailments such fevers, night sweats, inflammation, "female debility" (related to menstruation), poisoning, and asthma. The Farrier's Department includes medical recipes for horses and cattle. Other Departments herein: Miscellaneous, Coloring, Interest, and Glossarial.
