Splendidly illustrated with 200 full-page and double-page photogravures, this two-volume set is an incredibly detailed study on the architecture and decoration of the Palace of Versailles, one of the most prestigious castles in the world. Built in the French Baroque style during the reign of King Louis XIV, the Palace contains no less than 700 rooms, extensive gardens, and lavish decoration. The whole structure is characterized by its large curved forms, twisted columns, high vaults, and sophisticated shapes. The architect for the Palace was Louis Le Vau, the interior decorator was Charles Le Brun, and the landscape designer was the illustrious André Le Notre. The striking photogravures depict the most impressive features of Versailles, including the spectacular Hall of Mirrors, the Grand Canal, the Palace Chapel, the Royal Opera, the Bull's Eye Salon (named for its distinctive oval window), the Salon of Peace and the Salon of War, among others. Portfolios partly frayed along spine. Second volume with closed tears to head and tail of spine. Some offsetting to half titles. Text and captions in French. Portfolios in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good, plates in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 11211
