About this Item

Boston: Dana Estes & Company, 1898. Quarto, pictorial cloth, with floral-printed endleaves and all edges gilt. 412 pages, profusely illustrated with wood engravings, and also five full-page chromolithographs. One chromolithograph lacking; front endleaf cracked at inner hinge; occasional marginal soil, but still basically a very good copy. The Rev. John Erskine Clarke (1827-1920) was born in Calcutta in 1827 into a Scottish family of East India Company officials. He graduated from Wadham College, Oxford in 1846 and was ordained in 1851. He eventually rose to become one of the top churchmen of his day. In 1895 he was made Hon. Chaplain to Queen Victoria and after her death in 1901, Hon. Chaplain to King Edward VII. The halfpenny weekly paper for older children which he called "Chatterbox," was produced in collaboration with the London publisher William Macintosh and a skilled wood engraver named Johnson. It was first issued in December 1866 and continued for another sixty years. Bookseller Inventory # 10005
