About this title

Synopsis:

Describes the experiences of a girl growing up in a poverty-stricken family in a Bangladesh village and how her life is changed by an evangelist

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5 This title is misleading; as a third daughter in the son-preferring Bangladesh Hindu culture, Chayna is unwelcome, but her family apparently loves her and takes care of her. Read ers follow her growth sketchily from birth to about ten years of age. The main thrust of the story concerns a Christian missionary who appears in Chayna's village, converts Chayna's father, and spirits Chayna away to mis sionary school where she will live hap pily ever after. Readers will not get much feeling for this family, much less for its children. There are more facts about Bangladesh on the back cover than there are in the whole book. The color photographs convey much more of what life is like there. What few de tails are given of the life of this family are inserted only to contrast unfavor ably with the missionary effort. The book is clumsily done, and the text is vague. The Christians are all good, and the Moslems and Hindus are all igno rant and hostile. Characterization is superficial, and the text is inconsis tent. John Philbrook, San Francisco Public Library
