first or early printing of the first hardback edition (not stated); no dj as issued; As New; chart of the Cherokee syllabary laid in; this is a bilingual dictionary (Cherokee to English, and English to Cherokee) and also includes a grammatical outline of Cherokee; from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert with his bookplate laid in, as well as the original invoice from the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma Arts and Crafts Center, Tahlequah; Feeling is identified as the author, Pulte the editor, and Cowen the dictionary project coordinator; they were assisted by a dictionary committee: Charles Sanders (Chairman), Sarn Hair, Annie Meigs, and Anna Gritts Kilpatrick Smith; INSCRIBED ON THE FFEP BY THE EDITOR 'Glenn, / thanks for all your / help and encouragement. / Without it, this dictionary / would never have come / about. / Bill, Dallas / Feb 8, 1979; Pulte was one of my students and graduate assistants at the University of Texas at Austin in the middle 1960s; he conducted numerous interviews for the Linguistic Atlas of Texas German, especially in Harris County, the area of Houston, and he later contributed to two edited books I published on multilingualism in Texas and the assimilation of the German language in the U.S.; he and Feeling are named as the authors of the substantial outline of Cherokee grammar that occupies the last third of this book; in addition to Pulte's work with the language of the Oklahoma Cherokees, I feel that I have a special affinity to this people, its language and culture, as my father, an anthropologist, completed his dissertation on fire worship among the Eastern Cherokees in 1934 at the University of Chicago under the direction of Radcliffe-Brown, and during his lifetime never stopped talking about this work; this book would interest collectors of fine printings of Native American language dictionaries, and specifically of the Western Cherokee; hard covers are brown with gold lettering stamped on the front and spine, the great seal of the Cherokee Nation in gold figuring prominently on the front; 4to -- 28 centimeters tall, xix + 355 numbered pages.
