About this title

Bored with her doll and longing for a real baby brother, Annie swaps five of her father's pies for a baby from another dog family and finds out just how much trouble an infant can be

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-- When her father, the village piemaker (a character with his own crusty edge), leaves Annie alone with his delivery truck at one of his afternoon stops, Annie meets Beau (these characters are all dogs, by the way), one of a clamoring brood. She trades five cherry pies for the youngest of the bunch, taking Beau's brother to be her own. When she gets him home and he's puzzled, ornery, and homesick, Annie's sibling fantasy turns from romance to reality. Her crime is discovered, baby Claude is returned, and Annie instead becomes fast friends with Beau. Lesson learned; everybody's happy. The characters and story line are, in fact, a lot like a cherry pie--sweet and bitter. But the illustration is pure Chorao, holding great appeal for the younger set, with the softness in colors and vitality in the figures. The expressions on the dogs' faces are as varied as they are priceless. Given the proliferation of books pro and con single children vs. many siblings, this is a good but not essential choice. --Catherine vanSonnenberg, LaJolla Country Day School, Calif.
