About this Item

Traduit par Mary LaFon. Illustre de 20 Belles Gravures Dessinees par Gustave Dore. Paris: Michel Levy Freres, 1876. Large octavo, original publisher's binding of red cloth elaborately gilt-stamped. 147 pages, with 20 full-page engravings by Dore throughout. Spine ends a trifle worn and with light to moderate foxing throughout, but still a very good copy of the First Edition. Bookplate of noted American book collector Barton Currie. "Gustave Dore (1832-83) is an interesting, ambivalent figure, a transitional artist who carried the banner of Romanticism forward into the Second Empire. Realism and satire, grandiloquence and a sense of awe, cruelty and compassion, fought ineffectively to integrate a temperament which remained immature and vital into lonely middle age (Dore had a dominating mother and died aged fifty-one).Dore's emphatic style and interest in religious subjects made a great impression of Van Gogh." (John Harthan, in The History of The Illustrated Book). Bookseller Inventory # 4249
