The jazz historian's account of how jazz music developed in Chicago from 1911 through the late 1920's. Based on material developed for his pioneering "Jazzmen" (1939) this is written as a "documentary" play - complete with "music cues" "for those who know the music" and "that equally large group. who must always have something to read as they listen." Ramsey does note the piece "as published here is not intended to be produced without alterations". Among the "characters" in the drama: Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Preston Jackson, Lil Hardin, Bessie Smith, Pops Foster, Joe Oliver, Zutty Singleton & more. 32 pages. Approx. 5x7.
