About this Item

Whitman began writing "Leaves of Grass" in earnest, but his own testimony suggests that he wrote most of the "Leaves of Grass" in 1854 and 1855. The key word in "Song of Myself" and the whole of the "Leaves of Grass" first edition is freedom. As emblems of God, all nature is good and will do good as long as it has the freedom to do so. Later Whitman was to modify this doctrine, but throughout his life he subscribed generally to this transcendentalist doctrine. The other great poems of the first edition are (as Whitman eventually titled them) "The Sleepers," "I Sing the Body Electric," and "There Was a Child Went Forth." This the illustrated by Zhenya Gay children's book of "There Was a Child Went Forth," with the scarce dust_jacket. Dust jacket with creases, closed tears and small chips to the corners only. In very good condition in protective plastic transparency, Second edition. Size: 8" - 10½". Bookseller Inventory # 272657
