Despite the fact that Marie was a high-performing freshman in the top 10 percent of her class, the adviser told her not to waste her time. Youre going to end up cooking or cleaning at somebodys house. Her face flushed with anger, Marie stood up, emphatically announced that I am going to college, . . . . Marie graduated third in her class and went on to Colorado State College of Education in Greeley (now the University of Northern Colorado) where she earned her degree in 1935. Marie recalls that when she started teaching 70 years ago, she had two goals. I had to keep my job in the middle of the Depression and I had to keep the door open for others to come in. Because the first African-American teacher hired by DPS on probation in 1934 did not work out, Marie was mindful that her success would affect other black teachers for years to come. And her starting teachers salary of 1, 200 a year was like manna from heaven, Marie writes, because it enabled her to move her parents from a dim basement apartment to a more comfortable house. EVERY CHILD CAN LEARN should be on the required reading list of all current and aspiring teachers!Sincerely, Dr. Anthony P. Young, Psy. D. This book is a treasure. It is important and necessary reading for all teachers and parents. Thank you Mrs. Greenwood for being, thank you for sharing your wisdom. Gayle Banks Hamlett, MEd. Psy. D. About the Author:

Marie L. Greenwood, 95 grew up in the Denver Public School system. She graduated from West High School and was third in her class of 257. She received a scholarship to Colorado Teachers College in Greeley, Colorado. She became the first African American female teacher to be given a contract in the Denver Public School system. She became tenured in 1938 and taught in Denver for thirty years. http://editweb.dpsk12.org/greenwood/stories/storyReader$61 "I taught First Grade for thirty years in the Denver Public Schools. I believe it is there that one lays the beginning of a sound education foundation upon which a child can continue to learn successfully. The children I have written about in this book depict only a few of the many challenges I faced and how I did my best, for the good of each child, to solve whatever the problem might have been.No matter what ethnic make-up of my classes were, those were my children; we were always one big family. There are recordings of my life story and achievements, but this is the first time that I have written about some of my specific teaching experiences that might be helpful to other educators.Teaching First Grade was the joy of my life and because of my pioneering and trailblazing, I now have a Denver Public School named in my honor" - ""Marie L. Greenwood K-8 School.""Feel free to email the Author: eccl@myeccl.com
