About this title

This story is of life in the New Forest, where four children live in hiding, disguised as a forester's grandchildren, after their father has been killed at Naseby, fighting for the king. Cromwell rules the land now. The family home has been burnt and they are supposed to have died in the flames.

About the Author:

Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) was an English novelist, a contemporary and acquaintance of Charles Dickens, noted today as an early pioneer of the sea story. He is now known particularly for the semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy and his children's novel The Children of the New Forest, and for a widely used system of maritime flag signalling.
