About this title

Synopsis:

Eleven artists illustrate the 10 principles of children's rights adopted by the United Nations in 1959

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-5-- This chorus is simply the listing of the 10 principles adopted by UNICEF as the "Declaration of the Rights of the Child" in 1959. Each of the principles is illustrated by a different illustrator (including Helme Heine, Tony Ross, and Paul Zelinsky), making the book a colorful, visual treat. However, the content is very dry, having little or no interest for the readers who would be attracted to the illustrations. In the first person plural, each principle is set forth unadorned: "Principle Seven: Teach us well, so that we may lead happy and useful lives. But let us play, so that we may also teach ourselves." This principle, illustrated in soft water-based color by Ingrid and Dieter Schubert, reveals in the foreground a cheery cluster of multiracial children, while the background features a thatched cottage in the clouds (perhaps a school), under which children play. As with most pages, text and illustration contribute little to one another. But plotless and heavy-handed, it's only the pictures that will keep young readers turning the pages. Despite the fact that the book supports a worthwhile cause, it has little child appeal. --Carolyn Noah, Worcester Public Library, MA
