About this Item

A New Edition. Pages 28 pp.8vo. Printed paper wraps. Double column format. A New Edition. Podeschi D25. From the first American Collected Works of Dickens begun about 1851 by T. B. Peterson, who had bought the plates of Dickens' work from [Carey,] Lea & Blanchard, Harper & Brothers, et al. This volume must have been published ca. 1857. The individual issuesd are usually dated from the form of publisher's cloth and the publisher's address. This, part of the "Cheap Edition," is published in printed paper wraps. In the publisher's ad on verso of the rear cover, "Bleak House" is the latest novel listed as published (1853) heretofore. On the verso of the front cover, "Little Dorrit" is listed as published (1857). Confirming these dates is the listing of T. B. Peterson alone as publisher, without his Brothers, also at the old address of 102 Chestnut St., thus prior to 1860. See Podeschi D25 for the data on publications by T. B. Peterson. Retains the page numbers (pp. 35-62) of the issue of "Christmas Stories," each of which is noted on recto of rear cover as available separately at 12 1/2 ¢, the price on front cover . Cover edges soiled and lightly chipped. Else, Very Good. Bookseller Inventory # 9921
