Description:

Presumed first printing of the first edition, 1899. Printed at the Edinburgh Press and presumed bound in England. Oxblood buckram binding, with fairly crisp copper-stamped lettering and design to the front board and to the spine. A clean and well-preserved binding. Gently bumped and lightly abraded spine head and tail, and corners. Text block firmly bound in but note that there is a crack between the signature ending on page 176 and the signature beginning on page 177. Also with faint tidewater mark the size of a half-penny at top margin of both those pages, not into the text. 9.x 6 inches. With xx and 300 numbered pages of text, plus 28 illustrations, several of which are full-page monochrome plates. At the rear, opposite page 292, a fold-out color map of China and Japan, the map in superb condition. Previous owner name and year date in a neat ink hand to the half title page. Else a very clean copy. Gently read. A Very Good copy. Somewhat scarce with the map intact. This book was issued as part of the publisher's series, The Imperial Interest Library. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from China The object of the present work is to place before the reader the most important factors in the F ar Eastern problem; to discuss, as far as space will permit, the various questions connected with its solution; and to give an account of the principal events which have led up to the existing situation. Too little attention has hitherto been bestowed upon the Chinese point of View, Which has proved, so far as our imperial interests are concerned, a stumbling-block to British aims in China. It is quite as essential, in order that a thorough grasp may be obtained of the present aspect of affairs, to enter into Chinese pros and cons, as it is necessary to consider British interests and international claims. A book would, in fact, be incomplete which purported to depict the perplexing phases of the problem under discussion, without instituting an inquiry into the political and social forces which are at work in China, and Which must ultimately decide the points at issue.
