About this title

The fingers of pianists are broken for playing bourgeois music, teachers are humiliated and worse-the Cultural Revolution is in full fury on the mainland, and neighbouring Hong Kong is rife with rumors and riots.  University lecturer Dimitri Johnston has lived all his life in Hong Kong and regards it as his home, while his English wife cannot settle there. Meeting a young Chinese dancer, a refugee from the mainland, he becomes infatuated with her. But when they witness a police action against marauding demonstrators, they are both forced to confront choices that may devastate their lives.

From the Author:

This is the second novel in my China Coast Trilogy, dealing with the British presence in China from its apogee  to its decline. (The others are Shanghai and A Change of Flag.) There are few other accounts of the Cultural Revolution from the perspective of Hong Kong, a city filled at that time with refugees from the mainland. That is what I found intriguing in writing the book.
