First edition. Black cloth. 306 pages including index. With black and white photo plates throughout, including two fold out panoramics and a fold out map. All present as called for EXCEPT a map at the front endpaper. A detailed account of the travels of the British Consulate through Chinese Turkestan, that included parts of Kashmir, northern Tibet, and Mongolia, as well as part of eastern Russia and Afghanistan. Skrine recalls the daily life and customs of the people in various remote mountain villages, as well as superstitions, etc. Also recalled are the journeys among the mountains, with many photos of various remote peaks and valleys. FAIR condition. LACKING backstrip, with both interior hinges reinforced with white binding tape. Moderate fading to the covers, with minor to moderate scuffing and soiling. Light scuffing to the extremities. Text block weak but intact. Minor scattered foxing and soiling, with heavier foxing to the first and last few pages. Fold out map and panoramics with moderate to extensive tape repairs, some yellowing. Previous owner's large bookplate on the inside front cover. Bookseller Inventory #
