Written in 1925 by Osvald Sirén, one of the foremost Asian scholars of the first half of the 20th century, "Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Century" remains to this day the most comprehensive treatise on Chinese Buddhist sculpture. In this monumental 4-volume study, Sirén commences with a comprehensive introduction and survey of the genre, followed by 623 collotype plates highlighting over 900 specimens in stone, bronze, lacquer, and wood. The plates are arranged chronologically, based on inscriptions, dates, and historical records where possible. Within that framework, the author included other undated examples which closely correspond in style to the sculptures he could date with more certainty.Ex-Library copy, with small stamp at lower margin of each title (Occidental College Library), with reference number at verso. Minor abrasion (glue remnant) on inside of each back cover due to the removal of library pocket. Bindings and interior in overall very good condition. Osvald Sirén (1879-1966) was a Finnish-born Swedish art historian, whose interests included the art of 18th century Sweden, Renaissance Italy and China. Bookseller Inventory #
