About this Item

Chinese figural export watercolor Gouache on rice paper Late 18th century 18" x 13 ½" framed There is a rich tradition of figural painting in China, starting with the Tang Dynasty (618-907), an era considered a golden age in China. During the Tang Dynasty, figure painting flourished at the royal court. Artists displayed the splendor of court life in their paintings of emperors, palace ladies, and imperial horses. The market for Chinese export watercolors grew out of the trade in porcelain to the West. In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the widespread Chinese porcelain trade had affected all of Europe. And, at the same time, Chinese rulers were beginning to adopted Western European arts, culture, science and technology. The figures shown in these extraordinary export watercolors are wearing traditional attire. Each of these minutely detailed, vividly colored, paintings is depicted in perspective, a Western element. Surrounding the compositions are a cobalt blue painted border frame, cobalt blue being a very common color in Chinese porcelain designs. Bookseller Inventory # D00406c
