About this Item

Cantonese School Guangzhou (Canton) 1805 Watercolor and gouache on paper 26 x 21 framed The late 18th century saw the rise of natural history painting and patronage in China and the East Indies. The Chinese had been producing exquisite flower portraits from as early as the 7th century. When the Europeans arrived in Canton and Macao, the Chinese painters realized that the Europeans were keen to collect exotic specimens and wanted to commission drawings to send back home. The artists worked in and around coastal trading ports producing work for western patrons, and more specifically East India, and Dutch East India companies. Many of the watercolors produced in the 19th century became stylized and were essentially intended for the tourist market. Botanical watercolors such as these examples, although less scientific than western botanical illustrations, were certainly accurate enough to please the botanist and allowed for the Chinese artists to paint with the minimum of alterations from their traditional techniques. The subjects are presented as botanical specimens according to Western ideas; a sprig of foliage is shown where possible with a bud, a flower, along with moths and butterflies.
