Choix des plus Celebres Maisons de Plaisance de Rome des ses Environs
72 pages in text. Folio, 57 x 40 cm. Seventy-six engraved plates, numbered 1-75 with bis plate 39b. -- plus four engraved section titles and seventeen vignettes. Originally published 1809; this second edition is almost identical to the first. It was the first comprehensive survey with plans, sections, elevations and perspective views of the suburban villas of Rome with details of their garden arrangements. As some of the villas were not completed in their original design, or altered, the authors depict restorations based upon initial concepts. This work illustrates 24 villas with their gardens including Villas Albani, Medici, Panfili, Barberini, Borghese, D'Este, Farnesiana, Negroni and Madama, Casino del Papa in the Vatican gardens, and the Villa of Pope Julius III. Index of Architects [notables are Vignola, Bernini, Michaelangelo and Vasari]. BRUNET Vol. IV, p.489, calls it a " Tres-bel ouvrage." Old ownership blindstamp on title, minimal toning to first few leaves, overall an attractive copy, plates and text clean and bright. Modern quarter black morocco spine, and dark green damask cloth.
