About this Item

This is the family bible of some of the children of Christopher Brown (born maybe 1756 - died April 26, 1840) and his wife, Mary (Dustin) Brown (born about 1784 - died June 6, 1856). They may have been from the Fredericton area and were married there on March 10, 1811. Mary (Dustin) Brown died in Boston and was interred in Bath, Maine. This bible contains 4 pages of "Family Record" including 31 birth records, 8 death records, and 3 marriage records. The entries cover Christopher and Mary Brown's 6 children, born between 1812 and 1827 - Sarah, George, Christopher, Mary Jane, Lucy (?)Ann, and Justus(?) Dustin Brown. 2 lines of the next generation are entered: Sarah Brown married Henry Gill (born Dec. 1?, 1808). Their 12 children, born between 1832 and 1854, - Frathey Gill, Christopher Gill, George G. Gill, Marian, Henry, Sarah Jane, Justus, Lucy A. A., Susanah, Austin, Marg. Elizabeth, and Louisa Gill. George Brown married Catherine Dunn (born Dec. 26, 1813) and their 6 children (born between 1838 and 1851) are - George Washington Brown, (?)tus Brown, Mary Jane, Octavious Winslow, Christopher, and William Brown. 3 additional Brown births are Charles Edwin Brown, George Brown, and Sarah Jane Brown, (born between 1840 and 1850). An undated pencilled notation states that Henry Gill was from Park farm in Egloshayle in Cornwall, England and his relation there is a James Gill. This bible measures 9 by 11-1/4 inches and is 2 inches thick. It has a more recent rebacking with a medium tan, buckram spine and buckram corners. The original, stamped leather covers have generally good, slightly worn edges. The bible is tightly bound with a very good, unworn spine. Gilt lettered "Holy Bible" on the spine. The first 11 leaves, including the 2 leaves of the "Family Record" and the last 3 or so leaves, have edge chipping and wear. They have been coated with a semi-clear type of rice-paper. This makes the lettering harder to read but has stopped the wear to the edges. A number of pages are missing including 12 pages of the Psalms. The pages are tightly bound with occasional small spotting. Bookseller Inventory # 11348
