About this Item

no date (presumed 1968, based on OCLC records). Side folding newspaper, with a single center horizontal fold, believed as issued. 15 by 11 inches. 20 pages, with a few black and white photos. The first issue of this Boston, Massachusetts area underground newspaper, featuring content on the Vietnam War and protests against the war, including a discussion of the use of nonviolent terrorism. Also featured is an address to Martin Luther King, Jr. by Thich Nhat Hanh, on the purpose and principle behind self-immolation, as well as a poem 'Paradigm Latter Section of Long Poem "These States,"' by Allen Ginsberg. Bill Morgan's 'The Works of Allen Ginsberg, 1941-1994: A Descriptive Bibliography' states this poem was published in 1969 in the 'Dulocratic Review,' with no mention of this apparent earlier appearance. With content on arts, photography, music and literature also present in the newspaper. FAIR condition. The paper is rather brittle, with large tears along the hinges and center horizontal fold, resulting in some sections being tenuously attached. Extensive small tears and chipping along the fore edge and spine, with minor loss at the corners. Moderate to heavy browning to the paper. Overall fragile, should be handled with care.
