About this title

Synopsis:

Thirteen major monasteries were constructed on the Peninsula of Yucatan during the first thirty years after the Conquest, and all, with the exception of the one destroyed at Merida, can be visited today. Yet, beyond these well-documented religious structures stand a myriad of smaller, truly fascinating churches, hidden among the jungles. Erected with stones from earlier sacred ancestral sites and enlivened with rich and vibrant colors, their facades can be seen today often changing with the seasons and the whims of the local congregations. With over 350 magnificent photographs and a superbly researched 9-page gazetteer of churches, with their present-day names and site locations covering the states of Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo, CHURCHES OF THE MAYAS sets out to illustrate the little-known world of religious architecture of the Yucatan Peninsula beyond the sixteenth century.

About the Author:

With a restless spirit of adventure, Carmen Cusi de Garcia-Pimentel and J.B. Johnson have traveled more than 40 years throughout Mexico documenting architectural monuments of the country they both live in and love. Besides her experience as an architect, Garcia-Pimentel served as project designer of interiors in the United States and Europe for the Holiday Inn Hotels. Her signature style can also be seen in many private homes. Johnson, a graduate architect of the University of Texas, is well known for his work in furniture, accessories, and high-end residences. As a team, they have collaborated on many projects in Mexico City, Cuernavaca, Acapulco, and San Miguel de Allende. Their professional and personal interests have led them to travel, he with his Hasselblad and she with her pen, through most of Europe, the Orient, India, and the Middle East.
