About this Item

Original metal printing plate for page 22 of Wright's sixteenth novel, "Ma Cinderella," published by Harper Brothers in 1932. Measuring 3 5/8" X 5 7/8" (which reflects the actual text size, the page margins not reflected in a printing plate) and weighing a hefty 1 pound 7 ounces, the plate is in very good condition, shiny and coppery, with printer's ink of course darkening the background. The page plates for this book were acquired from the publisher by Wright himself during World War Two. The federal government had requested that publishers give their substantial backlog of metal book plates toward the war effort, for melting down for military purposes. Apparently Wright was first given the opportunity to purchase the plates, which he did -- the money going to the federal government. Wright appears to have purchased the plates for this title only; the remainder were presumably melted down, making these page plates the only Harold Bell Wright printing plates in existence. "Ma Cinderella" is set in the Ozarks, as are many of Wright's novels, and tells the tale of four-time widow Ann Haskel. Wright's descendants parted with much of his personal library in December 2005. A printed statement signed and dated by two descendants on behalf of the Harold Bell Wright Estate accompanies this item, specifying that it came from HBW's personal collection. A most unusual literary artifact, ideal for display. Bookseller Inventory # 34559
