About this Item

N.d. (1899) Presumed first edition. Hardcover in gray cloth. Inscribed by Parsons and also signed by the publisher C.F. Taylor on the first front blank. Patterned endpapers; 597 pp. with index of subjects and index of persons and places, additional pages of exerpts at rear. A tight, very good example, bit of soiling to the cloth and with light edge tidemarking to the first several leaves. Frank Parsons (1854-1908) was an American educator and social reformer, a leading social commentator of the Progressive Era and is considered the father of the vocational guidence movement. He wrote a series of books on scoial issues; this work, quite forward-looking for its time, deals with the public ownership of monopoly industries as a necessary means to combat predatory corporations, and also espouses a merit system for civil service, preferential voting, machine counting of ballots, and other means of fighting corruption in urban situations.
