Synopsis: Describes the aftermath of the Civil War, including the assassination of Lincoln, Reconstruction, and the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant.
From School Library Journal:
Gr 6-8-Good introductions to the closing years of the Civil War and the turbulence that followed. Chancellorsville opens with a discussion of why Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and how it changed the meaning and goals of the war for both sides. It then covers the major battles and campaigns that followed, explaining how the action on the battlefield both influenced and was influenced by the actions of the opposing governments. Civil War discusses the challenges the country faced with the loss of Lincoln's leadership as it struggled to reunite, and explains why Reconstruction failed, describing how opportunities to create a more just society and institute political change were squandered, leaving a legacy of bitterness and racism. Both books offer a balanced look at the motivations and actions of the opposing sides during the war and the political leaders afterward. Numerous color and black-and-white reproductions and photos supplement the texts. These titles offer more detail and analysis than Kathlyn Gay and Martin Gay's The Civil War (21st Century, 1995) or Paul Brewer's The American Civil War (RSVP, 1999). They will draw both general readers and report writers.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
