About this Item

8vo. Grey cloth spine and tan marbled paper over boards. 255pp. Illustrations. Very good. Mild edgewear, with lightly sunned spine. Lacks jacket, else a tight and decent first edition of this prolific writer's last book -- with a fine autograph addition: Tipped opposite the title page is an Autograph Note Signed from Pratt, 1p, 4" X 5", n.p., n.y. Very good. Though not marked, the recipient was noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Boldly penned in black: "What details do have on the catamaran ironclad built up a Georgia river in 1864? Mentioned by Scharf. fpratt." Pratt (1897-1956) died around the time this book, his last, was published, thus we've never encountered a signed copy. Thomas Wells calls this book "An interesting and generally accurate account of operations on the Mississippi and its tributaries; and appendix lists characteristics of the warships." NEVINS I, 231.
