The boys are middle class and in 1914, during which this story takes focus, they were most impressionable, malleable, suddenly plunged into war while still discovering the mystery of puberty. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, book burnings followed. Glaeser's view was considered pacifist, and he emigrated to first one then another neighboring country. He returned to Germany in 1939 as an editor. This work had been highly praised by other German writers of the era. Very good in good dust jacket. Signed by previous owner.
