About this Item

This is the 1904 yearbook for Columbia College, now Columbia University. That graduating class was most notable for including both Alfred Harcourt and Donald Clifford Brace, who went on to found one of the seminal publishing houses of the twentieth century. Along with Will Howe, they founded, 15 years after graduating from Columbia, Harcourt, Brace, and Howe, which lost Howe in 1921, gained and lost World, gained and lost Jovanivich, eventually lost Brace, but which still survives to this day as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The yearbook features a written profile of each senior on the verso and a black and white photo of the senior on the recto. For some seniors, a classmate has written a profile . Serendipitously, Alfred Harcourt has written the profile ("Don sat in Greek B. His baby-blue eyes were taking in the wonders of the college world . . . ") of Brace and Donald Brace has written the profile for Harcourt ("Alf is a very original person. He hails from up-state--New Paltz, New York, --'where all the flowers are fragrant and all the girls are beautiful.'" Bound in blue cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on the front board and spine; gilt top page edges; roughcut fore edges. The book is unmarked; spine is slanted and sun-faded; corners and spine ends bumped; edgewear to spine ends; white spotting to boards; no dust jacket, presumably as issued; Mylar protected. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 007179
