Map. Image measures 19" x 28 1/4". Includes accompanying sleeve published by The British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara, containing two saddle-stapled pamphlets, "Note on 'A Classical Map of Asia Minor' by W.M. Calder, 7 pages; and an index to the map by W.M. Calder and G.E. Bean, 6 pages. Clear and informative map of present-day Turkey during the Classical period, offering a comprehensive view of the region during its peak of ancient civilization. Issued with a pamphlet by W.M. Calder and G.E. Bean, this map is often misattributed, and was in fact expertly drawn by Mary Gough. The map was made after J.G.C. Anderon's Map of Asia Minor, originally published in 1903, with partial revisions reflecting the research conducted by Mary and Michael Gough. Depicting provincial boundaries between 63-72 A.D., the map indicates cities and towns, Roman roads (certain or probable), and other roads. Distances shown in English miles and Roman miles. The focus on roads and settlements over topography and waterways reflects this map as an archaeological reference. This map is an invaluable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of classical history. Mary Gough (nee Ormsby, d. 1992) was a draughtsman, naval architect, and author. She was one of the first British women to qualify as a naval architect, and served in World War II driving ambulances and directing convoys. In 1949, she relocated to Turkey with her husband Michael Gough, a British archaeologist who studied classical antiquities. Mary participated in many excavations alongside Michael, who served as the director for the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara from 1960-1968, and together they conducted research for over twenty years. This map is one of her most significant published works, as well as her written publications describing the Gough's work in Anatolia. The pamphlet notes 'a warm thanks to Mrs. Michael Gough, who generously offered to draw the map'.
