About this Item

First Edition. Three volumes, quarto blue cloth with silver gilt-stamping to the spines and front boards, 1213 pages, total. With a foreword by film critic Roger Ebert. As new without dust jackets as issued. Who else but filmmaker Russ Meyer, best known for his unbridled obsession with women with enormously large breasts, could come up with an autobiography of such massive proportions? Illustrated throughout with black & white photos, including candid shots, stills from his films (Mudhoney, Fanny Hill, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Supervixens, Beneath the Valley of the Supervixens, etc.), and behind-the-scenes from various sets and locations. Meyer began his career in filmmaking in his early teens and won second prize in a nationwide Eastman-Kodak contest at 15. His skill and technical expertise was honed during World War II where he served as a newsreel combat cameraman in Europe. After the war, he became a still nude photographer and shot six Playboy centerfolds in the early days of the magazine. He then turned to filmmaking and brought his passions to the screen in earnest with a sense of unapologetic purpose and vision. As Roger Ebert notes in his foreword: ÒThe history of the cinema has contained countless directors, but only a handful who genuinely felt that making a film their way was more important than any commercial consideration. It may seem ironic that a director who is identified in reference books as an Ôexploitation filmmakerÕ is actually one of those rare souls. But he is.Ó. Bookseller Inventory # 16243E
