London: John Churchill & Sons, 1866. 223 x 142 mm. Original cloth, front hinge cracked, some wear to extremities. Light toning. Bookplates of Samuel Ashhurst and G. N. J. Sommer, M.D. First Edition. A collection of surgical observations and case histories made during the first fifteen years of Fayrer's medical service in India, which lasted from 1850 to 1895. During this time Fayrer participated in the Burmese campaign of 1852, served as political assistant and Residency surgeon at Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny, and from 1859 to 1872 held the professorship of surgery at the Medical College of Calcutta; he retired in 1895 as president of the Medical Board of the India Office. His most important work, The Thanatophidia of India, was published in 1872; it is one of the finest books on the subject of Indian poisonous snakes (see G-M 2105). Fayrer corresponded with Darwin during the last decade of Darwin's life on snake poisons and other subjects. The present work includes descriptions of various orthopedic procedures, a rhinoplasty, surgical treatment of elephantiasis, cesarean section, etc. Bookseller Inventory # 39538
