About this Item

In old ink, bold, "Bland Ballard / Jan 1st 1857." The author, September 4, 1819 - July 29, 1879, was a United States federal judge and grandson of Bland Ballard, the old Kentucky pioneer. He earned a law degree from Transylvania University in 1846, then moved to Shelbyville, then Louisville, Kentucky, to practiced law. Ballard married Miss Sarah McDowell in December, 1846. They had five children: Mary H., Austin, Fanny, Bland, Jr., and Susie. In October, 1861, Ballard received a recess appointment from President Abraham Lincoln to a seat on the United States District Court for Kentucky. Ballard served as president of the Kentucky National Bank and the Cave Hill Cemetery Company and was active in various civic organizations. He was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville.
