About the Book

We're sorry; this specific copy is no longer available. Here are our closest matches for In the Clouds by Murfree, Mary Noailles [Charles Egbert Craddock].

Description:

First edition, BAL's first printing. Brown cloth, decorated in black, lettered in gilt. Very minor rubbing. Bookplates of Frederick Skiff and Estelle Doheny. Considered a more mature work than The Prophet of the Great Smoky Mountains, In the Clouds shows deeper characterization and develops Murfree's trademark country-city dichotomy. Diverging stories involve a number of obverse pairs joined by a parade of stock mountain characters. Action involves mountain feuds, moonshining, shooting matches, courtroom proceedings, snatches of community interaction at the village forge, store and sawmill, and a camp revival meeting that features Brother Jethro Sims exhorting sinners with hellfire to the accompaniment of a thunderstorm. Book Description Houghton Mifflin / Riverside Press, Boston / Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1887. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Very good with general wear, a library stamp on the bottom of the text block, and other library markings. Still, unusually nice for an ex-library copy, with two bookplates on the front endpapers, one of Charles Quintard, the first post-Civil War Episcopalian bishop in the South. Although not marked as such, this copy is from the library of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Peter Taylor and his wife, the National Book Award-nominated poet Eleanor Ross Taylor.
