About this Item

Pictoral boards with a colourful front cover, showing Nancy studying what looks to be native american art with a magnifying glass, are bright and unworn. The hinges and binding are firm. The pages are clean and unmarked. The Nancy Drew series was originally created by Edward Stratemeyer who hired a number of writers to write juvenile series books under psuedonyms. One of his daughters, Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, took over the business from Edward when he died in 1930. Not only did Harriet keep the Stratemeyer syndicate afloat during the Great Depression years, managing the efforts of the syndicate's pool of writers, she also wrote many of the Nancy Drew titles herself, using the "Carolyn Keene" pen-name. This title (The Clue in the Crossword Cipher) is one of the Nancy Drew titles that Ms. Adams wrote. Ms. Adams inscribed this copy to Jack Bales (a noted young adult literature researcher) on the verso of the ffep as follows: "Best Wishes / to / Jack Bales / from / Carolyn Keene / (Harriet Adams)". A unique association copy for the advanced Nancy Drew collector. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 000931
