About this title

Synopsis:

The Cobbler's Christmas...a compilation of Christmas skits intended for all ages. These skits can be performed by families, churches, or professional theater groups. Reviewed by Anne Wolfe “The Cobbler’s Christmas” by Mark Oliver is a collection of 27 Yuletide short plays, not bound by reality but all having very much to do with the real world. In this sense this work is similar to Mr. Oliver’s first novel, “Witt’s prayer,” which is both surreal and very relevant. This artful collection of moral holiday plays is just fine for a church or small theater group to perform before any-sized audience. They are rich with messages mixed with many kinds or moral slants, none of them subtle. However, they are all playful, spirited, exuberant, humorous, unexpected, and even deft. They contain potent doses of wit, wisdom and charm sure to bring light to a dark winter night and warmth to a cold windy day. While these are meant to be performed, the skits can also be charming to read. One piece, “The Twelve Bums of Christmas,” involves a homeless mother, a rich and indifferent brother, and a benevolent snowman. There is much expected warming—however, it happens in a novel fashion. All the skits show remarkable imagination and while many happy endings can be counted on, what is surprising is how they come about. As I read these, I became more and more engrossed, delighted by each gem as I looked forward to the next, taken with their capacity to genuinely amaze me with their verve and outright brilliance. Laughter, a few tears, and a satisfied glow can come while going through these inventions. These holiday skits involve such situations as: Santa has to contend with a new thing-a-ma-jig to replace his sleigh; a hair-dresser in a small town falls for a man who doesn’t even speak her language; foreign spies during World War II hide in a factory where a woman who can’t move her legs works, and she is in danger. Each impossible scenario demonstrates how adversity brings about the best in the characters while bringing out chuckles and belly laughs in the observer Multiply any of these plots by 27 and there is enough material to keep a reader or audience engaged for hours, days, even weeks. It would be great to couple with hot cocoa on a snowy evening. One note about the author: Mr. Oliver has come through his own ups and downs and met them with humor, dignity and frankness. His writing is indicative of his honesty and upbeat attitude. Ann Wolfe is an "Archives Assistant" at a community college who has also reviewed a lot of literary periodicals for an online publication and holds a degree in English as well as a master's in library science.
