About this Item

8vo. xviii, [1], 795pp., [1], [1]p errata. Brown calf leather binding. Boards are glued and hinged to binding. Part of the spine is patched with brown leather and the lower spine is chipped with missing leather. A faint ink name of J. E. Brown is written on the front board. On the blank right front end sheet glued to the front paste down is a glued news article clipping with the heading "Head Qr's Third Military Dist, Montgomery, Ala., April 1st, 1867 Orders No. 1." (The third Military District comprised the States of Alabama, Georgia and Florida.) At the end of the order is the printed name of John Pope, Major-General Commanding. A second smaller news clipping pasted down next to the Pope article comes from New Orleans. This article is brown stained and difficult to read. J. E. Brown's name is signed on the front blank end sheet and on the next front blank end sheet. The prominent ink signature name of Ben. Snodgrass Bellefonte Ala, Jan 1st, 1866 is written at the top of the front blank end sheet and his inscription appears twice on the rear end sheet. "Ben Snodgrass Book Bellefonte Ala, January 1st, 1866." and below " Ben Snodgrass Book Huntsville, Ala January 1st, 1864. On the rear paste down is a glued news article clipping "Amendment to the Stay Law" with the name D. L. Dalton, Secretary of State at the end. There are several marginalia notes and folded corners regarding acts in the text. This was a working copy. The name J. E. Brown written in ink appears twice inside the text. Sabin 57632. Internet research indicates Ben Snodgrass from Bellefonte was a Confederate officer. Unclear if this book was owned by the same person. Interesting to note the name of J. E. Brown. Joseph Emerson Brown was the Governor of Georgia during the Civil War. Unclear also if this book was in the possession of the same person. Bookseller Inventory # 4368
