Description:

4°, contemporary sheep (scraping to covers, other minor binding wear), flat spine with crimson morocco lettering piece, gilt letter. Two engraved folding tables. Overall in very good to fine condition; internally fine to very fine. ix, 197, 156 pp., viii pp. errata, 2 folding engraved plates. *** FIRST EDITION; a second, revised edition was printed in Rio de Janeiro, 1828. When the Cortes offered a prize in 1822 to the jurisconsult who presented the best prospectus for a civil code, Ferreira Cardozo da Costa took the opportunity to submit this work. His general scheme is laid out in the two folding engravings, which show justice in terms of obligations and rights (illustrated with diagrams in the shape of trees). At the end of the main text, on pp. 189-97, he includes a translation of an anonymous work written when the United States was attempting to write a civil and criminal code. This work, which Ferreira says had a profound effect on him as a young man, argues that the code should not be based on earlier models, but should be worked out by philosophers who are free of party prejudice.Ferreira Cardoso da Costa (1765-1834) was born in Bahia, took his law degree at Coimbra University in 1785, and was appointed to its faculty in 1788. With a profound knowledge of ancient and modern law, he became a noted jurisconsult, serving as magistrate in Portugal for some years. In 1810 he was rounded up with others accused of Jacobinism and collaborating with the French (the "Setembrizada"), and deported to Ilha Terceira. There he married into a wealthy family and spent the rest of his life in the Azores. He was a corresponding member of the Real Academia das Sciencias de Lisboa.*** Sacramento Blake VII, 362: calling for 312 pp. Innocêncio VII, 427-9: without mention of the errata leaves and the plates. Cf. Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 223-4 for other works by this author. Not in JCB, Portuguese and Brazilian Books. Not in Welsh or Greenlee Catalogue. Porbase locates two copies, both in the Biblioteca João Paulo II of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (without mention ot the final viii pp. errata or the 2 folding plates). Copac locates a single copy, in British Library. NUC: MiU-L. Bookseller Inventory #
