About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Kirkham, Aileen

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 5–Building on the efforts to have more collaboration between school media specialists and classroom teachers, these titles offer up units and lesson plans that will enable librarians to help bridge the gap between what happens with students in the library and what happens in the classroom. Each unit includes an initial lesson to be done in the library, one to three bridge activities that can be completed in either place, and culminates with a lesson that is meant specifically for the classroom. Thorough lesson descriptions, blackline masters, and a list of resources, both print and multimedia, are included. Book titles are generally available in most school libraries, or can be found in public libraries. The units of study are generic enough to fit into almost any schools curriculum and can be used in any order. For the younger grades, units are age-appropriately conceptual, such as names and naming, family, friendship, and teamwork. Lessons geared toward the middle grades are more content specific, e.g., presidents, hurricanes, tsunamis, and pilgrims. These titles may offer a few ideas for inexperienced school librarians looking for ways to approach their teachers with ideas for collaboration, but there is little here that is new or different for those who have already begun the process of cooperation.–Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA
