About this title

Synopsis:

  • For the Kirby fans who can't get enough, this volume reprints issues of The Jack Kirby Collector, the highly-acclaimed magazine for Kirby fans. Included are the Tough Guys issue, the DC and Marvel theme issues, and a special issue detailing the intricacies of Jack's art! Also included is a new special section with over 30 pieces of Kirby art never before published, including Jack's uninked pencils from New Gods, Mister Miracle, Forever People, Jimmy Olsen, Kamandi, Captain America, The Silver Surfer, OMAC, and more! It features interviews with Kirby, Stan Lee, Frank Miller, Will Eisner, Neal Adams, nearly the whole Marvel Bullpen, and other Kirby collaborators! Plus there's page after page of rare Kirby art, much in its original pencil form. It's a colossal celebration of the most acclaimed creator in comics: Jack Kirby!

From Booklist:

Jack Kirby, whose career stretched from the early 1940s co-creation of Captain America to 1980s work in animation, has been called the most influential comic-book artist of all time. The Jack Kirby Collector, a magazine devoted entirely to documenting and celebrating his work, won't argue the point. The fourth collection of reprints from the zine contains critiques of his stories, minute examinations of his drawing style, and interviews with artists who collaborated with or were influenced by him as well as with Kirby himself. Though Kirby is best known for his superheroes, such as the Fantastic Four and the Hulk, many articles examine his work in other genres, including horror, crime, Westerns, and even love comics. Virtually every page features artwork, often in original, uninked pencil form; there's plenty to choose from, for Kirby drew some 25,000 pages. The Kirby Collector may strike nonfans as bordering on the obsessive. But if anyone in comics warrants such detailed coverage, it's Kirby, who towers over other superhero artists like one of the intergalactic gods he depicted. Gordon Flagg
