131/200 Signed Alfred Douglas on colophon. Octavo. 125 (1)pp. Original blue boards with black lettering on label of spine. 62 poems printed on Japon paper by Lord Alfred Douglas, better known as the friend and lover of Oscar Wilde. The collection contains poems written over the span of 30 years and an elaborated note of ten pages by the author. Douglas is best known for his "Sonnets - in Excelsis" (1924) and "Sonnets and Lyrics" (1935). Douglas was the editor of the Oxford magazine "The Spirit Lamp" where he had praised Wilde's Salome. The rehearsals of the play were halted when Lord Chamberlain's licensor banned the play on the grounds that it was illegal to depict Biblical characters on the stage. After the trials brought against Wilde and in particular, the release of surpressed portions of Wilde's letter under the title "De Produndis" by Robert Ross in 1912, Douglas turned against Wilde and eventually against homosexuality in general. After Douglas's incarceration in 1924 his feelings towards Wilde softened considerably.Binding with light wear along edges and a few finger stains on cover. Spine sunned and light discoloration along to and foredge of binding. Some foxing of endpapers. Block uncut at foredge and bottom. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition.
