About this Item

Folio (389 x 266mm). Engraved title and 17 plates by D’Avignon. Modern marbled boards, decorative endpapers; (occasional light toning and marginal soiling, few plates shaved close but no loss, title lower outer corner torn and restored, otherwise an excellent survival, large and plentifully engraved). Attractively engraved large model book of fine French calligraphy by Louis Gilbert. Rare calligraphy learning manual of Louis Gilbert, his "collection of different pieces of writing to help him learn the art," not found on market, but recorded in Journal Typographique et Bibliographique, which was issued in 1804 (p. 229). The revival of calligraphy in France during the 19th century was in part due to a great artistic response against the mechanization of manual crafts during the Industrial Revolution. Writing was, of all the arts, viewed to be the most useful to society. Fine large-scale engraved model books such as this are rare survivals given their student-centric use, this copy especially beautiful with the many extra flourishings and ornament filling the plates. The collection is very charming for its eclectic phrases in which the obviously devoted student tested his hand, even calling himself "Gilbert the Young.". Bookseller Inventory # D7411
