About this Item

Collection of five autograph letters between April 7 and May 12, 1948 (7 x 10 inch) with addressed envelopes. Benjamin F. Lownsburg (1920-2000) was an international expert in the field of nematology, especially in th area of diseases of fruit and nut trees caused by round worms. He did graduate school work at Cornell University after WWII and from there he had a long coreer as a lecturer and reasearcher at the University of California at Davis (1953-1983). He was the author and co-author of many scientific publications. These letters by Lownsbery are written to Joyce W. Hagemeyer (1927-2001) a fellow student at Cornell and his wife to be (they married in 1953). Lownsbery was in Hicksville, New York as part of joint undertaking between Cornell University and the USDA to set up a large research station to combat a plague of roundworms affecting New York crops. Within the context of an older college boyfriend writing a younger college girlfriend, Lownsbery also tells Joyce about his work in helping to set up the field station, his experiments, and his co-workers on the project. In one letter he writes "The best part of our potatoes are planted, much of the rubbish at the new lab has been cleared away. New plots are being constructed there (We actually have the title to the property). Our farm machinery has almost all arrived. Bill has swung a deal with a topsoil moving outfit to get more infested soil for the 6 1/2 acres and he is doing his best at jacking the Div. of Nematology into getting construction of the new lab going." Lownsbery also jokes iwth Joyce about baseball. He is not a fan, but Joyce is a big Dodger booster. Bookseller Inventory # 11177
