About this Item

Three quarter red leather with marbled boards, raised bands, gilt decorations on the spine, marbled endpapers, and gilt edges. Rubbing wear at the extremities somewhat pronounced at the lower corner of the front board, two adherent spots on the rear board at the spine, nineteenth-century bookplate, scattered brief foxing and a small marginal dampstain on two leaves. Engraved vignette title-page, title-page, xii+27pages + engraved plates (73 of 74 present in this volume). The Coesvelt collection of ninety works, which is documented herein, was initially offered to the Engish government. After they declined, the Emperor of Russia purchased seven of the works, and the remainder were sold through Christie's. Coesvelt, a London banker, wrote the descriptive comments on his paintings.
