About this Item

(LAWS). A Collection of the Public General Statutes . London: George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, 1797-1802. 5 vols. 1st eds. Contemporary tree calf with gilt-ruled raised spine bands and gilt-lettered morocco spine labels. Some slight toning and some edgewear, a few minor wormholes not affecting text, else a near fine set. In the volume containing the Acts for 1797-98, not all the acts for 1797 have been bound in. This volume includes act allowing importation and exportation of goods from Jamaica, Grenada, and the Bahamas. The volume for 1798-1799 contains Slave Trade Acts for 1798 and 1799; acts for loans to Grenada and St. Vincent; Duty on East Indian sugar. The volume for 1802 includes an act increasing duty on flour from America; an act to encourage fisheries in Newfoundland; acts dealing with importation and exportation to the West Indies, Newfoundland, and Labrador; an act to allow cessation of duties on goods carried by British ships to the United States. Many of the acts concern raising monies for the army or navy and for governing Ireland and Scotland. An interesting look at late-18th century law. Bookseller Inventory # 54048
