Description:

Poor condition. Hardcover: H 34cm x L 26.5cm. Quarter leather binding in the style of mind-19th century New Orleans French Quarter bookbinder Simon Reichert but without his bindery ticket. Dark red leather spine chipped and torn at ends with 11cm swath at heel lifting up and exposing underlying quires; spine decorated with several horizontal gilt stamped bars and, typical of Reichert, small gilt stamped title lettering ("Romances") in second delineated compartment from top. Dark patterned paper boards with worn dark red leather corners; owner's label removed from front board center exposing underlying cardstock; patches of surface paper peeling to both boards (particularly rear board) exposing cardstock as well. Front and rear hinges cracked; pastedowns toned; no preliminary or terminal blank leaves present. Tears and some chipping at leaf edges particularly at fore-edges; foxing/toning throughout; pulled/deatched quires/leaves. #1 to #12 feature pictorial title pages. All but #23 have oval light blue ink stamps of New Orleans music dealer T.E. Benoit with fourteen of the Paris imprints also having a French music dealer/publisher stamp too.
