About this Item
Amsterdam, Meulenhoff & Co, 1918-1920. Sm.8vo. 21 volumes. Original imitation batik bindings (some spines sl. discoloured), top edges gilt. Decorative printed cotton with motifs derived from Indonesian batiks, produced mechanically by the Leidsche Katoenmaatschappij (1836-1936) was also used in book bindings, with a great variety of motifs. Bookbindings of simulated batik were supplied by various publishers. The most famous example is the booklets that appeared in this luxury version around 1920 in the small series Meulenhoff's Kleine Boeken van groote schrijvers. Authors: Marianna Alcoforado, P.C.
